Horror Classics – Herbert George Wells

Herbert George WellsHG Wellsis known as one of the fathers of Science Fiction and in my opinion, some of his stories qualify as Sci Fi/Horror stories.

War of the Worlds is undoubtedly a Science Fiction novel, but it’s also arguably a horror novel.  There are horrible monsters (if aliens), lots of blood, disaster, death and violence.  It’s just that the monsters happen to be from Mars.

The Island of Doctor Moreau is another example of Horror/Sci Fi.  There are horrible, created monstrosities and much human despair and death.  The Island of Doctor Moreau is comparable to Mary Shelley’sFrankenstein when it comes to horror fiction

I think that HG Wells was a pioneer of genre fiction, not just Science Fiction – but the gamut of Sci Fi, Fantasy and Horror.  What about you guys?  Lemme know!

I agree with you. He really moved Sci-Fi forward as a genre. Before there had been Jules Verne, but his was more adventure with Sci-Fi elements thrown in. Wells’ stories couldn’t have existed without the scientific element.

As to horror, for me horror is where mortals are almost total effect. In War of the Worlds that is definitely the case. And I think it is also the case with The Island of Doctor Moreau. The doc puts the creatures he creates at effect of his evil.

H.G.Wells was a pioneer and brought Sci-Fi many steps forward from where it was.

He absolutely was. To me, horror is something that is horrifying, scary or frightening. It’s a possibility that may not be physically able to occur in this world, but one you can imagine occuring with terrifying results.

I know in general the genre usually includes ghost stories, malignant supernatural beings, monsters, etc. All of those subjects can bleed into other genres, like fantasy, sci fi or even mystery. It’s a very interesting genre and HG Wells was a major contributor to it.
