Horror Classics – Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe, the classic horror short story author. I admit that I’ve been waiting to get to him, saving the best (in my opinion) to – almost – last.
Poe knew how to craft a story that dealt in horror, in psychological thrillers and he even did some sci fi/fantasy works. My favorite examples of these come from Edgar Allan Poe, Selected Works. So, without further ado, here are my favs of Poe:
Horror: The Masque of the Red Death – scariest story EVER.
Psychological Thriller: The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat
Sci Fi/Fantasy: Some Words with a Mummy and The Unparalleled Adventures of One Hans Pfaall – my fave is the mummy one.
We also know him for his Gothic poetry in his famous poem, The Raven.
Poe was a man who’s writing inspired so many, and yet it was not given proper credit as classic American Literature in his time. He lived off of what he wrote, but was not accredited with the fame and fortune some other classic authors have enjoyed. I, personally, am deeply inspired by Poe and love his works. They’ve scared the crap out of me, made me creeped out, then made me wonder how the hell he elicited such reactions with a simple story.
In a search for inspiration, I often turn to this quote:
“Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.”- Edgar Allan Poe

That is an awesome quote.
