Horror Classics – Bram Stoker

Bram StokerBram Stoker - the classic Gothic/horror novelist who invented the modern and pre-modern vampire. Count Dracula is one of those characters, along with the charismatic Abraham Van Helsing.  Bram Stoker was an entrepreneur in the area of Gothic fiction, I mean, who doesn’t know who Dracula is?

Most people think that Mr. Stoker is the first Gothic novelist, but that title is normally accredited to Horace Walpole, but he did not create an inter lapping world to ours with horrible, blood-thirsty monsters that had hardly any restrictions at all.  Mr. Stoker created not only a novel of damnation and vice (which is the premise of most Gothic novels), but he also created an entire world with its own rules, a supernatural underworld that is unknown by regular citizens.  I think one of the attractions of Mr. Stoker’s horror classic is that it has a secret society/mystery feel to it.

I’ve noticed that in the last few author reviews, there has been a consistent thread of the works being horror, but also in some other genre.  I’m pretty sure that there hasn’t always been a seperation and am not sure there is a clear line between genres today.  What do you guys think?
