Book Review: Daughter of the Drow by Elaine Cunningham
Book: Daughter of the Drow
Author: Elaine Cunningham
Genre: Fantasy
Julia Rating: 7
Comments: I enjoyed this book – however I originally did not care for the heroine. She did grow on me, and by the end I found her entertaining, but the beginning made me basically dislike every single drow (dark elf) – including her. I’m not sure if the author meant to do that. Also, I found a couple of the characters very flat. There seemed no purpose in them except to rustle up some trouble, and while trouble is always interesting, I think the characters need to be interesting also.
All in all though, this book was a compelling read once you get into it and if you can overlook the points above. It’s the first in the Forgotten Realms: Starlight and Shadows Series and I will probably read the rest of the series eventually. The basic story starts out with Liriel, a dark elf who lives underground in the dangerous world of Menzoberranzan – where women, magic and the spider god rules. She is being made to become a priestess of the spider god, but she yearns for the world above. When she travels outside of Menzoberranzan once and meets a human, her whole world is flipped upside down. Their travels and adventures are depicted with descriptive beauty and both Liriel and her human friend – Fyodor are well characterized. I just wish the rest of the cast of the book were better described and were deep, instead of the shadows they are depicted as.
I did get more into the book as I went along, it was just the character descriptions that bugged me. I recommend reading Daughter of the Drow for light reading – just something to pass the time.
