Book Review: Ravenous by Ray Garton

Book: RavenousRavenous

Author: Ray Garton

Genre: Fantasy

Julia Rating: 6

Comments: Ravenous is about a werewolf infecting a small town in Northern California via sexually transmitted disease. In this book the author proposes becoming a werewolf is, much like AIDs or syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease. Unfortunately, the only way to cure this disease is death by silver bullet.

I feel bad whenever I give a book a low rating, but this one didn’t cut it for me. I felt too exterior to all the characters, and the one that I empathized with didn’t last. Also, the ending was a twist in a direction I didn’t like. There are some endings I don’t think are fair to readers that have put in 8+ hours reading your book – and this is one of those endings. If the book were a short story (and honestly, the author could have cut some stuff out), the ending would have been fine. But since it was a novel, I was disappointed.

I don’t like to put spoilers in my posts, so if you want to know what the ending was, leave a comment and I’ll tell you. Otherwise, just know that the book itself was well written, pulled me along okay, but there isn’t much character development. I could have done with fewer characters and more development.

BTW – Ray Garton has a really interesting Myspace page – a lot of author info is on there.
