Book Review: MirrorMask – by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean
MirrorMask is a graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. Neil Gaiman is the novelist and Dave McKean, the illustrator.
The book is about a young woman named Helena who’s parents work for the circus. Helena doesn’t want to travel from place to place with the circus folk, she wants to “run away and join Real Life”.
When her mother falls ill, Helena and her father stay with Helena’s aunt. While there, Helena accidentally enters into another world, a world of adventure, fantasy, and most of all, masks. Everyone this other world has a mask and think her “normal” face is unnatural. Helena learns that the world has two sides, the dark side and the light side. The light side is dying because someone stole the “mirrormask“. Helena sets out on an quest where she meets friends, finds who she should trust and learns a lesson or two on the way.
I have to say that I enjoyed both the book and the movie. The book has a teensy more of a whimsical feel, and is a bit darker then the movie manages to be. But, all turns out well in the end.
